This magnificent statuary marble bust of Melpomene is after the Roman full-length statue which now resides in the Vatican Museums, Rome. The 2nd century AD statue was discovered in 1774 in the environs of Tivoli at the Villa Cassio.

Our bust dates to this period, the late 18th century. Created during an era of great excitement surrounding this magnificent discovery. The Dionysian bust with dramatic flowing vines running through her hair and in classical dress only shows part of her attributes. The Vatican statue holds a theatrical mask in her right hand.
