Ottoman Empire Mother of Pearl Miquelet Gun
Ottoman Empire, 18th century
A fine and rare 18th century Ottoman (Spanish style) Miquelet flintlock gun, the barrel with mounted brass sights and silvered detailing, terminating in the silvered open mouth of a dragon, the stock richly decorated with mother of pearl along the full length with brass details.
Height 136.00cm (53.54 inches)
Condition: Some losses to the mother of pearl, general pitting in stable condition, the main spring is missing.
The Miquelet flintlock mechanism was developed by the Italians and Spanish in the 17th century. The significant breakthrough was achieved combining the striking plate and the pan cover, providing both a good spark and also protection of the prepared powder in the priming pan. This type of mechanism is the first true flintlock and dates to the 17th century.
