Unique Japanese Low Table – Shou Sugi Ban Cedar Wood Coffee Table

Gallery Price: £17,000

A very fine 19th-century antique Japanese Low Table –  A traditional Japanese low table constructed from a incredible substantial cedar plank and raised on elegant out swept legs.

Japan, circa 1900

Height 30cm
Width 152cm
Depth 90cm

This Japanese Low Table is finished with a technique called Shou Sugi Ban. It is a Japanese technique of preserving wood. The surface is charred with fire and then sanded back to a smooth surface. It is commonly used for the exterior cladding of buildings where the charred timber protects against insects and as a water repellant. In this case, the technique has been used to artistically enhance the appearance of this Japanese low table surface, accentuating the strong vivid grain of the cedar tree.
