A Chinese export Batavia ware brown glazed tea pot.
This tea pot dates to around 1730, it is from a group of Chinese ceramics characterized by the brown iridescent glaze. This particular pot has had a pretty hard life, the handle has a 19th century rattan replacement, the lid is the correct period however is not original to the pot. There is a note inside the pot, saying how valuable this pot was thought to be. Charming and fascinating though this may be these accumulated faults have lowered its value.
