A handsome late 18th century Tunbridge Ware writing slope, the sloping top veneered in numerous exotic specimen woods and the sides in Partridge wood. Retaining the original marbleised paper interior and the ink wells. - Both in fine condition.
England, circa 1770
Partridge wood is a timber that is rarely seen, it is always a treat to see it however. Characterised by a slight flecking to the surface it somewhat resembles the plumage of a partridge - and thus the name. The top shows an interesting combination of indigenous and exotic timbers, ebony from India, Thuya wood from north Africa, numerous species of rosewood, yew wood, and others. The top has warped over the years however when locked it doesn't show.
